'The Dark Knight Rises' To Hit Record Numbers Amiss Mass Shooting

Dark Knight Rises Batman Bane Fighting - H 2012

'The Dark Knight Rises' is set to hit record numbers at the box office this weekend, despite the tragic Colorado mass shooting at a midnight showing of the last installment of director Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy...

According to Hollywood Reporter, the superhero tentpole is poised to gross between $80 million to $90 million on Friday for a weekend opening in the $175 million to $180 million range -- the second-best three-day debut of all time after The Avengers ($207 million).

Avengers had the advantage of being released in 3D, with $35 million of its gross coming from the upcharge.

The Dark Knight Rises' projected Friday number included $30.6 million in midnight earnings, a record for a superhero film at midnight and the best midnight gross for a film in 2D.

A midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado erupted in chaos on Friday (July 20) morning around 12:30 a.m. when a gunman entered the theater and opened fire, killing at least 12 people and wounding more than 38.

At press time police believe the unidentified 24-year-old gunman acted alone. Witnesses described him kicking open the back door of the Century Aurora 16 theater and opening fire with four weapons, one AK-47-style assault rifle, a shotgun and two handguns. Wearing a bulletproof vest and goggles, he stood at the front of the theater and appeared to be shooting at victims randomly while confusing them with a tear gas-like device.

Sources reveal the gunman called himself the 'Joker' from the second installment of Nolan's trilogy starring Heath Ledger, and when the police searched his apartment he had the Batman theme song playing in his home.

So sad...
